Last week we told you to pick a goal and make a plan. We hope you have done so.
Now it is easy enough to think of something and write it down but it means absolutely nothing unless you put plans into action. Now is the time to develop habits which will help you succeed in life. These habits will take hard work, courage and discipline on a daily basis to integrate and maintain in your life but their role is crucial in helping you achieve your goals.
Now there is no hard or fast rule on how long it takes for something to become a habit, but at the end of the day does it really matter? Whether it’s 3 weeks or 3 years the process will be the same and will require the same amount of dedication.
Most people go through a routine of starting and stopping, starting and stopping when it comes to developing habits. We’ve all been there, even though we know that the power lies within consistency. So what we need from you is to break this cycle. We need you to commit 120% to whatever it is you need to do that will allow you to achieve the goals you have set for yourself. You can go and read up on some of the most successful people in the world and one of the common traits they ALL have is their habits. Whether it’s waking up at 3am, exercising before work every day, writing a daily plan, meditating, whatever it is they do, they do it EVERYDAY. There is no off-days, no weekends, no ‘breaks’ or cheat days. Those habits are part of their routine, and they make damn sure that they are done every day irrespective of circumstance.
Now we mentioned most people start and stop when it comes to developing habits. It’s not easy but remember nothing worth having comes easy to us. It is not the beginning where people struggle; it is the point when the initial motivation fades and the reality of what you are accomplishing sets in. This stage is known as the “Fight-Thru” (Tom Bartow) and is critical in developing successful habits. This is the point when people feel themselves tiring, when circumstances are conspiring against them and old habits are crying out to be used. But, if you can defeat this stage (and it will conspire against you more than once when developing beneficial habits) you will find those habits becoming more second nature.
So when you feel yourself reaching this stage we need you to talk to yourself. Don’t ignore what’s coming, instead say to yourself “the struggle has begun; but this is one fight I will not lose and I don’t care what it takes to win because I am committed.” Think about how bad you will feel if you give up, and conversely how great it will feel to win. If that doesn’t work then think about what your life will look like in 6 months-2 years time (if you are lucky enough to wake up each morning between now and then) if you don’t overcome this Fight-Thru.
So brace yourself, because the journey of successful habits is not easy. It is a struggle, it is long and it will throw up as many hurdles as possible. But if you want to take yourself to the next level then you know deep down this is something you have to overcome.
Above all, remember that many of us are going through the same process. L & M has been created to allow us to tap into motivation when we need it most, and support us in making our dreams become a reality.
