Gluttony, to the vast majority of people is a bad thing, but, to the more life educated among us it can also be a good thing.
Let's start with the bad.
The most common form of Gluttony is with money and material things that one day we just get bored with, that seemed a good idea at the time when we could brag to our friends but now we discard without a second thought. Take the legend that is Mike Tyson. Mike once bought a home in Farmington, Connecticut, for $3 million. He made some modest changes to his estate which included a 3,500 square-foot night club that held 1000 people and a 1,500 square-foot exercise facility. The estate had 18 bedrooms, 24 full bathrooms, 14 half-baths, an indoor racquetball court, 7 kitchens, a theater, an elevator, a 3 story foyer, and 50 skylights. Tyson admitted to only visiting the place 5 times, and after a year went to sell the 56,000 square-foot home, putting it up for sale for $25 million!! (which he never achieved)
Take a minute to think about that. How overkill to do that. Sure, you will be sitting there now reading this thinking, wow that sounds awesome, but what does 1 man need 24 bathrooms for?! And 7 kitchens?! I know the man was a machine that needs to consume a huge amount of food but 7 kitchens is just ludicrous.
We go more into depth on this subject in the upcoming and more appropriately named blog post "Greed"
So let's move onto why Gluttony can be a good thing.
It is a good thing when it comes to being a good human, a good person in life. I mean how is it possible to over indulge and over consume when it comes to helping people, or making people feel good? What about in competition, we all want to win otherwise we wouldn't play, so whether it be on the running track, on the playing field, in the office, over indulging on being number 1 is a good thing (in my eyes anyway, I know there are some of you reading this part with foam coming out of your mouth). It is good to be number 1, because when you are number 1 you get the big pay, the nice car, the nice house, the nice upbringing for your kids that you didn't have.
As wonderful as all that sounds though, you have to be very careful not to go crazy with it like our friend Iron Mike up there ^. You must strike a balance in life so that you don't become someone with all the right attributes to be a great person who most people (not everyone) likes but then waste it away and become some gluttonous pig with a crazy lifestyle that the world gets no benefit out of.
So think on about what kind of man you want to be.
