For any track and field fans they will understand what this means.
For any 400/800/1500m runners they will understand how this feels.
The ‘Home Straight’ is the final 100m on an athletics track. When you reach this point everything is conspiring against you. Your muscles are swimming in lactic acid; you feel like you are running backwards because you are towing 2 fridges and a wardrobe; 100 metres feels like 100 miles and your brain is asking why you are doing this to yourself.
How does this apply to you?
We are now in the final weeks of 2014. The end is in sight however 98% of people take this time to start unwinding, looking forward to the festivities upon them. In other words they give up.
This is an opportunity that we (the 2%) can exploit.
Yes you have invested a lot over the past 11-11.5 months. Yes you are tired, yes it may be cold outside, yes it may be pitch black at 4pm, yes it may be raining and snowing outside, yes you are mentally and physically fatigued BUT we need you to pick it up a gear.
The home straight is all about mental toughness, and you need to make a decision that you need to give it everything left in these last few weeks. Look at how much you have put in so far, why squander it all away now?
The greats appreciate that time is precious and therefore they have a sense of urgency about them, and they exploit these periods when the opposition is giving up. They know that when that final whistle goes there is a W or a L.
That is it.
Win or Lose.
John Regis used to train on Christmas Day every single year because he thought that he would get a competitive advantage. And do you know what happened when he found out that some people started training on Christmas day too?
He started doing double sessions.
By all means spend time with people important to you. Have fun and be thankful. But don’t neglect your responsibilities, because your dreams don’t wait for a time that is Convenient for you. You need to appreciate the urgency that there are only a couple of weeks left in this year and that success doesn't wait for you. How bad do you want to be in that 2%?
So dig a little deeper and put forward 120%. As they say, it's not how you start, but how you finish. And if you can finish 2014 strong you will be primed to hit 2015 with a bang.
To Your Success,
L & M
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you in 2015.
